There is no doubt about the value of simulation (CAE), when you are developing new products. Nevertheless, for all the simulations you run there is a price to pay in terms of extended development time. At the same time, simulation software is very expensive so it would make sense to maximize its impact on the development process. Of course there are situations where there is little benefit from multiple simulations – for example when modelling designs that are primarily driven by aesthetics. But there are plenty of companies who have untapped potential, when it comes to simulation. There can be many reasons (the study above points towards unsupported, complex and pricy software) but, essentially, it often boils down to simulation being viewed as a bottleneck in the design process. Paradoxically, having a simulation-driven design process helps increase product performance and furthermore lowers development time and costs. But how do we remedy the flaws of CAE?
Essentially, the best way to to maximise the effectiveness of CAE is through automation. It is simply not possible to run the simulations needed manually – within the time constraints of most development processes – to fully explore a design space.
This is why we created CORTIME – a computer-aided optimization (CAO) tool for SOLIDWORKS. By using the file parameters (such as measurements) as variables and by setting objectives and constraints, CORTIME will use its advanced algorithms to navigate through all the possibilities of the solution space, while automatically modifying the model and iterating through the simulations until an optimal design is found.

Thanks to CORTIME’s intelligent algorithms, the modifications will follow the optimal direction, saving time in otherwise useless experiments. CORTIME will initially explore many different designs and thereafter start to refine designs in the optimal area. This means that CORTIME provides a sense of direction in the design space, based on geometrical behavior.
When selecting the amount of iterations and number of optimization sessions, the product developer will know how long it takes for the optimization to complete. Furthermore, when confronted with simulation errors, CORTIME will just navigate away from them, continuing with the optimization process without any loss of data. Therefore, you can completely dedicate yourself to other tasks while CORTIME is optimizing.
Once the process is done, you will be able to check the results, explore all iterations of the process and visualize the development. Thanks to CORTIME’s advanced visualization tools, which includes 2D and 3D graphs, you are allowed to restore all the iterations from the optimization. Hence, you are able to hand-pick optimal designs in a timely fashion, without worrying about extended development time.
